What to wear at the Italian beaches is a post that shows how differently we Italians like to dress even at the beach. We do follow a certain amount of implied rules.

What to wear at the Italian beaches

You might think this is nonsense but follow my reasoning. Every time you go to the beach you definitely start screening everyone around. Dress code is the first deduction point to know where someone’s from. Like for instance, I just got back from Ibiza and it was so funny to try identify people from their costumes/clothes. Through this post I want to give you some ideas of what Italians wear at the beach. My never ending difficulty at dressing for a beach day has been tested lately and I came up with some tips.

What I am wearing: Subdued dress / Charget bag (similar here) / Rayban Clubmaster / Reebok slippers

Lightweight dresses

The first and most important thing to bear in mind is how sticky you will end up at the end of the day due to sand. Unfortunately (personally speaking) most of the Italian beaches are made of sand not pebbles, which means you would need lightweight dresses. Not shorts, not jeans, dresses! Long t-shirt are the best or any type of loose lightweight dress. You have no idea of my hideous resistance in the sun, so if you are even a little like me, please opt for a simple dress.

Everytime we get up and go the “lido” or anywhere away from the sea we tend to cover up, we are not used to go to a cafe still in a bikini. So we need something to throw on quickly.

A Handy Bag

As for bags, there are two school of opinions: one who go for a huge canvas bag and the second for handy bags. This copy of the Cult Gaia bag is perfect for going to a sand beach because you won’t have any sand left at the end of your day!

You would just need a case for the smaller piece you would need like lip balm or so…or you might use an old dust bag inside to keep your stuff safe from falling anywhere.

The Towel-Dress

Another useful addition to your beach day is a big light towel that can also be used as a dress. I know it’s called pareo but I don’t like those, I like the bigger ones. There are so many little shops which sell those everywhere.

Also this year you are no one if you don’t have an inflatable animal. Personally I have seen a big red lobster in Ibiza and I am looking for one here in Italy. Couldn’t carry it on my hand luggage home!

So apart from my very light skin, are there some rules you follow when you go to the beach? Also, I am trying very hard to tan faster but I would need one month time of vacation!! *dreamy*

xx Cate
