Since I photograph clothes and accessories almost 24/7, the time has finally come to give you some advice on how to photograph accessories in fashion shoots like a pro.

Oh yes, since I am a full-time photographer and part-time blogger I want to give you some tips on how to photograph accessories like a pro. You may remember on a previous post where I talked of the creative director and the 3 people working on a shoot (you – the photographer and this third person).

With Tommaso who took these images, it’s the 50-50 option: he is the photographer, I am the ‘model’ who gives him some instructions to follow. In the end, he also uses his creative eye, but not 100% of the time. Thank you.

Bearing this in mind, it was possible to have these images. The main focus of these images was the stars necklace as a protagonist. I was gifted this piece of jewellery in exchange for an Instagram picture so the main focus was the accessory, not my outfit or my hair.

How to Shoot Accessories

First of all think of the crop you want to have and tell your photographer or friend-photographer. Give them some guidelines.

• Use portrait images. (Full body images are too big to get details of such an object on you)
• Think of close-ups. (Read: take a lot of details images).
• Alternate these two types of images in order to have a more dynamic shoot

The Equipment to Take Close-Ups

Very easily you won’t need a fancy billion camera to do so. Also, your phone would do fine. Just focus on the image and by using your phone settings or your camera settings remember to keep the biggest aperture possible. From f/1.4 to almost f/4 you get that blurry background so that the focus is exactly where you want it to be: around the necklace.

The tricky thing about accessories is that they are usually made of some metal material meaning they reflect anything: you, the sun or the camera.

Since we don’t want to Photoshop it all, let’s remember how staying slightly on one side of our object really help us not getting in the picture.

What to Wear when Shooting Accessories

Another quite interesting part is what to wear when shooting accessories. Since they are shiny, small but need attention, I would suggest playing monochrome or anything not loud.

Don’t wear super colourful dresses or anything that drives the attention away from our object. Play the easiest way possible. As you can see I was wearing a pair of white mom jeans a simple dark grey knit.
