Edinburgh Travel Guide of the Best Instagram Spots

Location:  Edinburgh, Scotland
Photography: 35mminstyleEdits: 35mminstyleCamera: iPhone SE

First of all this post is dedicated to all those wanderers who go around with one or two big cameras to then use their phones. Yes, this happened to me last year when I visited Edinburgh for the first time. It was raining every single second, therefore too cold for using my film camera (I did it anyway don’t worry, pics will come soon) and too risky to use the digital one. Hence, the remaining one was my poor phone camera always at hand.

Having said that, you can have great photos even with your phone, plus add a sprinkle of Lightroom presets and there you go.

But what I want to talk about here are actually the Best Instagram Spots you can find in Edinburgh to capture. At least in my opinion. Edinburgh was a little jewel even under the rain. I seriously adored it – the old town and the new. Proper post will come soon.

1. Circus Lane

No matter what everybody else is saying, Circus Lane is and has to be NUMBER 1. This little street is a bloggers dream! When I went there were really other 2 bloggers doing a proper shoot, so imagine! The fact is this narrow pebbled street has those lovely cute houses on every side which make it just very Instagram-like. Just so you know, the above pic has become my phone lock screen! XD

2.The National Museum Of Scotland

The National Museum of Scotland is the best interactive museum I have ever visited plus look at the architecture. I was breathless for the scenic cealing and the prefection of the archs. Also they are two and more museums in one, the natural sciences museum is attached to the historic one.

Of course I have preferred a walk back in history through the stories of Medieval Scotland, Bloody Mary and so on. I am an historian by heart but I have to say some technological bits were really funny. Then above all, I have felt like my Vanessa Ives in Penny Dreadful when she wanders to this huuuge natural museum in London. The atmosphere was incredible.

3. Mary’s Milky Bar

This gelato shop deserves its own point because it is the cutest ice-cream shop. I didn’t go inside because I was starving more like a hot chocolate and I ended up with the best fluffy macchiato I could ever asked for in the cafe on its left. Highly recommended. It was December and I couldn’t handle ice cream. Anyway this spot is below the castle in Grassmarket Square.

Address is:
19 Grassmarket, Edinburgh EH1 2HS

4. The New Town

By writing the New Town I am talking of the Georgian side of town. From Prince Street to Queen Street. All I can suggest you is to wander around those beautiful white houses and snap snap snap.

Also in this shopping area there are some adorable little shops with some very interesting piece of homeware. I won’t mention the famous shops, just know that Edinburgh has it all. Also know, I did not enter Primark.

5. Calton Hill

The view from above Calton Hill is magnificent. You have Edinburgh harbour with Leith from one side (Trainspotting anyone?) to the old town to the other. Also Arthur’s Seat is visible. You can do a circle of Calton Hill, enjoy the monuments, climb of them and simply enjoy the view. Bright note: this hill is in the very centre of town, it’s not difficult nor tiring and really worth it.

Extra Spot: The Christmas Market

To me Edinburgh was synonym with Xmas market. And I was right, there are 4 floors of outdoor stands with anything. Plus there are event everywhere. The outdoor cinema with Home Alone was a great idea as the ice-skating ring. Edinburgh is great at Xmas and I am sure it is every month of the year.

I also have to say that I was in love with Scottish accent, so strong, deep but in some way cosy. People there are very friendly, the Haggis is so good, the mountain at the edge very tempting. I do want to go and visit the Highlands. Above all, Edinburgh was an incredible city for me. Coming from Brighton which is a little town that I truly love, I think I prefer Edinburgh. Also the university was in a fantastic gothic old building that made me want to go back studying. Seriously. See you very soon Scotland, I am not done with you at all.
