Why I’d rather invest in designer bags

I was thinking about my bags collection, which is not massive but I am quite pleased with it and I wanted to write something related. Why I rather invest in designer bags is first of all, a weakness and second, a valuable investment.

Think at bags as a good bootle of wine, with time, its value increases. This does not happen to high street bags. Sorry but it is true. Quality comes with a price, especially handmade quality. Usually brands with a big name have a big history made of culture, work, establishment and so much more. I have read so many biographies of Coco Chanel and I am still in love with her ambition and strength as a woman. Dior is another one; Gucci’s family has a long tradition of leather makers from Florence; Fendi, Prada, Versace, Valentino have a whole world behind their names likewise Dolce&Gabbana has a more recent history. Nonetheless their products are all signs of luxury.

What I am wearing: Rayban Round classic sunnies / Topshop jeans jacket (old) / Boohoo jumpsuit / Mulberry small Lily Bag (similar) / Asos Boots

I prefer getting my hands on one good iconic bag instead of 10 high street bag dupes. I am also human, so sometimes when prices are unreasonable high, I buy the Zara’s copy. Because let’s face it, my favourite bags are really expensive (thinking of Chanel 2.55, Chanel Boy, Hermes Birkin) but you can save for those bags I call ‘the Bloggers bags‘.

If you notice in the blogosphere right now there are few bags that keeps popping out and they are not extremely expensive, meaning you can save money to buy them and most importantly not for 7 years. Some Gucci bags: the Marmont, the Disco Bag, are all under 1000£! Some Mulberry, Givenchy and Saint Laurent as well.

My new bag: the Lily Bag

My chosen bag was the Small Lily bag from Mulberry in the bright blue color. In fact my collection has got a new enter precisely this last summer, I will leave you the video at the end of the post to watch it, it’s me bubbling about Bicester Village and the Lily bag.

Okay, let’s keep an order.

Mulberry Lily Bag: Why I rather invest in designer bag, 35mminstyleBefore I start talking about the Lily bag you have to know a few things about me:

  • I am Italian and Mulberry does not exist here (I don’t even consider Milan and the two bags La Rinascente offers, it’s like a joke)
  • British designer brands are my weakness
  • I like to spend my money right. I could never buy a bag for 5000£, I would travel with those money instead. It may sound a bit controversial with this all post, but I do have a point!

Saying this, when I was in Brighton, I knew of the existence of the Bicester Village one hour from London and I knew Mulberry was in there. So I just jumped in the train heading north to Bicester, hoping to find my bag of dreams.

The Lily Bag was my second dream bag, first dream bags were the Alexa Bag and the Cara Backpack – both too expensive for me – so the Small Lily Bag was perfection. I entered the shop three times before convincing myself on the color. The bright blue is not so easy to style up (I wanted a nude white – of course there was none) so I wasn’t completely sure of my choice. But I kept thinking about it, going back into the shop (the sale assistant took me as a lost case) and I wanted a Mulberry bag.

Now I can’t be happier. In the outlet I paid half the price I would pay in the actual shops, the leather of the Lily is so smooth and it is just perfect. Simply it’s from an old collection, therefore I have only found a similar color and different leather with a golden metal closure and shoulder strap.

You too can invest in designer bags without selling your kidney. Make a list of your favourite bags, do an online research of the price, if there is an outlet near you or if somebody is selling one used (depop app!!) and save some money. It will last. I have broken my lovely Accessorize bag long ago, but my Noe bucket bag from Louis Vuitton has not a single scratch for instance.

As for my Lily bag, we still have a lot of time to spend together… which is your dream bag? Because my list keeps growing and growing.

xoxo, Cate
