Often, we hear people talk about what colours make them look good and which ones make them look pale or hideous. This actually makes sense because not all colours go well with different skin tones and this is one important consideration when choosing what colour your dress for a formal event should be. But first, how do we determine which colours are best for us?
Your Skin Tone Determines the Best Colours to Wear
Determining your skin tone.
In order to figure out your true skin tone, you need to look beyond the surface colour. The skin’s surface colour usually changes due to a variety of factors, including exposure to the sun and skin conditions such as acne and rosacea. Your true skin tone is best determined by the undertones. So, how do you find out the undertones?
You can determine your skin tone at home using the white paper test. First, clean your skin. Make sure you remove all cosmetics as this could affect the results. After washing your face, wait for approximately 15 to 30 minutes until any redness fades. Use natural daylight to examine your skin tone because artificial lighting can change its appearance. Then, hold the piece of paper up to your face and observe how your skin looks like.
If your skin appears light brown, yellowish, or greenish in contrast to the paper, then you have a warm skin tone. If it appears pinkish, rosy, or bluish, then you have a cool skin tone. If your skin appears ashen or grey, then you have a neutral skin tone. For those with skin conditions or if you are tanned, you can ask somebody to do the paper test on the crease behind your ear. This area is less likely to be affected by the skin condition or the extreme tanning.
Warm Skin Tones
Jessica Alba, Beyonce, and Kim Kardashian are well known for their warm skin tones. The best colours for these skin tones are on the warm side of the colour wheel, specifically yellow, red, orange, peach, coral, amber, and gold. Olive, moss, orchid, violet-red, cappuccino, cream, mushroom gray, or taupe are also beautiful on this skin type. So, if you have a warm skin tone, you can choose from the varied collection of Peaches Boutique’s gold prom dresses.
Cool Skin Tones
Nicole Kidman, Kate Winslet, Liv Tyler, and Lupita Nyong’o are celebrities with cool skin tones. Bright blues, deep purples, and frosty shades are best for this skin type. They can also look stunning in bright reds and pale yellows, even in neutral colours such as navy, grey, or white.
Neutral Skin Tones
Julia Roberts, Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Aniston, and Kerry Washington have neutral skin tones. The best thing about having a neutral skin tone is that you can wear anything on the colour wheel. Still, the softened or muted versions come highly recommended instead of the brighter shades. These include lagoon blue, jade green, and dusty pink. Off-whites, coffee, mid-range greys, and black are also great choices for this skin tone.
Colours for All Skin Tones
Pure whites and light blush pink look great on any skin tone, with the latter making your skin look brighter and bringing out its natural glow. Teal is also a shade that can be worn by anyone, and is a shade that works well for both warm and cold seasons.
So, if you find out that you have a warm skin tone but you love icy colours, this doesn’t mean you have to stop wearing these. You can still do so but instead of wearing an entire ensemble, go for a scarf, shoes, or bags in your favoured colours.
